There are some specific rules that must be observed in studying the Bible.
1. Always take the subject literally unless it plainly says that it is a parable, allegory, metaphor, sign, or example.
ALL THESE TERMS ARE SYMBOLS OFGOD’S WORD, THE BIBLE.

2. Never build a doctrine or guidance on ONE verse. You need 2 or more corresponding verses to verify.
3. Do not accept ANY advice or doctrine that is different from the Bible. Gal: 1: 8-9.
This means that even if an angel comes to you with words different from what God has already declared you are not to believe it. (This would include dreams, fortune tellers, “people with a ‘word for you,’ new revelations etc.) God has given the only revelation of His will and it is in the Bible.

4. The Law of Double Reference. These words are not found in the Bible but the concept is.
It means that one section of scripture will be fulfilled at two different time periods. Example: Compare Matt. 2:15 with Hosea 11:1 and Exodus 4:23. What we see is Jesus being taken to Egypt as a babe and secondly that God calls Israel His son and they were in Egyptian bondage 400 years previously.
Another example of double reference is ‘seeing Satan fall from heaven’ Jesus said He saw it happen. Luke 10:18. referring to Lucifer’s fall in the pre-Adamic days of Ezek. 28:12-16. And again in the future fulfillment when Satan will be cast out of his access to heaven by Michael and his angels. Rev. 12: 7-12.

5. The law of Double Reference is not the same as Fact and Application.
Fact and Application is taking the true meaning of an incident in the Bible and then using it to illustrate a spiritual point.
An example of this would be FACT Mark 4:35-41. A great storm came upon the disciples as they
were crossing the sea, Jesus was asleep in the boat, they were afraid. They awakened Him and he said “Peace, be still” and all was well. That would be the fact of the story.
The APPLICATION of it would be this: “ When a storm of life is about to sink your boat, be sure that Jesus is aboard, because He can bring peace to any situation.”
Much confusion arises in Bible study when the Application is taught for the Fact.
